What you need to know

Please note: the standard shift for this position is Monday - Friday, 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. Anyone in this position is considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by their direct supervisor. Required Education and Experience:

  • Associate's degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Basic computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and billing entry
    • Working knowledge of veterinary equipment used within a veterinary teaching hospital such as: anesthetic machines, fluid pumps, blood gas analyzers, oscilloscopes, defibrillators, nebulizers, and endoscopic equipment preferred.
    • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

      Other Requirements:

      • Technicians in this position may be required to work alternate shifts based on the surgery schedule or other assignments as needed
      • Other shifts include, but are not limited to the 9:00 a.m. -6:00 p.m., 10:00 a.m. -7:00 p.m., or 11:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. shifts
      • Technicians in this position will be required to work holidays, weekends, and "on call" duty on nights or weekends
      • Technicians in this position must follow the emergency call policy and respond

        Preferred Education and Experience:

        • One year experience in a veterinary medical setting and or central sterile facility on the job training

          Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

          • Intermediate skills or higher in computer software programs; Excel, Word
          • Intermediate or advanced training and experience with central sterile processing of instruments
          • Intermediate or advanced training and experience in veterinary technology and RVT program
          • Have intermediate or advanced training circulating cases in the operating room, terminally cleaning, and operating and troubleshooting arthroscopy and laparoscopy equipment
          • Have previous experience taking emergency call

            Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

            • Educational training from an LVT program
            • Certification as a central sterile technician from International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM)


              • Operative Duties - Performs all the duties necessary to competently circulate surgical procedures for all services of the small animal hospital which may include exotic animals, primates, as well as the canine and feline species. Adheres to the principles and practices of aseptic and sterile technique according to the guidelines of AORN, and AAMI guidelines and recommendations. Assists with patient transport from gurney to surgical table. Assists anesthesia as needed or requested within surgery. Assists or performs proper patient positioning, head support, eye protection, and limb restraint specific to the surgery and safety guidelines. Maintains nursing records and any other paperwork requested by the supervisor. Performs sterile skin prep of surgical areas, sterile field preparation, opening of sterile disposables, instruments, instrument packs all while adhering to principles and practices of aseptic technique. Connects and operates equipment for the assigned procedure and trouble shoots equipment as needed. Utilizes departmental checklist to document and account for all suture, blades, hypodermic needles, sponges, and instruments at the beginning and closing of the surgical procedure. Performs periodic patient safety checks. Uses proper PPE and follows safety guidelines when handling soiled items at all times.

                • Central Sterile Work - Performs O.R. procedures for sterile instrument quarantine, quality control documentation, and notification of completion of quarantine to other technicians once cleared for usage. Performs all duties necessary for instrument decontamination, cleaning, packing, wrapping, and sterilization, insuring that instruments packs follow the standards and guidelines, AORN, AAMI, and IAHCSMM and of the manufacture of chemicals used to perform those duties. Learns and is responsible for MSDS guidelines of chemicals used within the central sterile operating room areas and dons appropriate PPE for instrument processing. Charges for any items checked out to other services or research accounts immediately and documents the charge in the Tracking Log.

                  • Pre-Operative Duties - Assists faculty, residents, interns, students, and other veterinary technicians in Pre-operative patient care within the small animal operating room, anesthesia prep area, and/or the dental suite and cardiac catheterization lab. Reads available texts about surgical procedures if not familiar prior to patient arrival to the O.R. Learns the basic steps of the surgical procedure. Verifies the correct patient and correct procedure to be performed in accordance to the checklist policy. Pulls necessary sterile supplies, sterile instruments, and equipment appropriate for the assigned and posted procedure. Sets up the operating room prior to patient arrival in the proper manner according to hospital and OR standards. Obtains case specific equipment, and tests the equipment prior to the patient arriving in the room. Reads the patient medical record, prior to patient arrival to the OR, and relates any pertinent information to the Team Leader and plans their care according to the information. Performs duties within the recommendations and guidelines of AAHA and AVMA, hospital policy, and AORN20%.

                    • Policies and Procedures - Maintains a clean and organized work environment in the operating room and other work areas. Arrives in a timely manner to work each day in order to be properly dressed in surgical attire at the start of the shift. Weekday shifts assigned by supervisor; which can be one of the following: 11:00 a.m.- 8:00 p.m., 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m., 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., or 8:00 a.m.- 5 p.m. Communicates via various media throughout shift or while on-call according to protocol. Follows VMTH infection control policies. Continually learns medical terminology related to surgical procedures. Follows protocols and policies to request supplies and handle broken equipment. Submits Workday time and time sheets according to schedule.
                    • Independently maintains assigned technician responsibilities. Maintains service inventory pull sheets, pack lists, and surgeon's preferences according to departmental guidelines. Performs daily, weekly, and periodic cleaning of the entire surgery facility including the operating room suites, sub-sterile hallway, central sterile and decontamination rooms, storage areas, OR locker rooms, break room, and all instrument handling areas. Adheres to all TAMU, VMTH, and departmental policies and procedures. Answers work telephone or personal cell phone for work related duties. Greets customers/clients warmly and ascertains their needs. Provides excellent customer service via face-to-face means, phone, computer, and/or email. Directs requests and unresolved issues to the designated resource, team leader or supervisor.
                    • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills, as well as strong listening, verbal and written communication skills. Is adaptable to changing schedules, or assignments, and takes the initiative to complete duties and independently assigned responsibilities. Manages stress well with a high-pressure workload, and frequent assignment changes. Works well with a group of diverse individuals. Highly developed sense of integrity, and commitment to customer satisfaction. Demonstrate passion for excellence, with respect to treating and caring for patients and customers. Willing to work a flexible schedule, and understanding of the need to work occasional overtime when necessary. Possesses a strong work ethic and team player mentality.

                      • Post - Operative Duties - Performs proper disposal of sharps and bio-hazardous waste for any case. Submits correct charges for procedures. Turns in nursing record and any other paperwork for the case for review. Checks technician record file daily for any corrections of the nursing record or charges, making and documenting changes as needed. Restocks any unused sterile supplies, instruments and equipment. Pulls cases for the next day or add-on emergency cases. Reports to Team Leader for next assignment.

                        • Training, Labs & CE - Assists with veterinary student teaching labs as assigned by the supervisor. Assists in clinical research cases including necessary record keeping. Assists in resident arthroscopy, total hip, laparoscopy, thoracoscopy and spinal labs. Participates and attends CE classes and local seminars related to work as scheduling permits. Maintains required and assigned online training courses and other training and certifications as required. Maintains training binder and case log. Performs other duties as assigned.
