What we want

The Academic Advisor II, is responsible for recruiting and advising undergraduate students concerning education and career goals, academic requirements; generating and using degree evaluations when advising students; discussing financial consequences of registration; referring students to University resources; overseeing projects related to student success within the departments; and working directly with faculty on implementation of programmatic development. Required Education and Experience:


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years of experience in advising, recruiting, teaching, coaching, Student Affairs or other related area.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Requires ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
    • Requires ability to work with diverse groups of people and be helpful, respectful, approachable, and team oriented
    • Requires ability to build strong working relationships and a positive work environment.

      Other Requirements or Other Factors

      • Requires ability to travel
      • May periodically require evening and weekend hours

        Preferred Education and Experience:

        • Master's degree or above in Liberal Arts or general subject area of placement
        • Four or more years of experience in an administrative role such as advising, recruiting, teaching, or other related area

          Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

          • NACADA, TEXAAN, or TACRAO certificate of participation
          • Valid driver's license with the ability to obtain State of Texas class "C" vehicle operator's license within 30 days of employment

            Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

            • Experience with TAMU policies and procedures; experience with undergraduate degree programs in general subject area of placement
            • Excellent interpersonal, communication (oral and written), and problem-solving skills
            • High degree of self-initiative and ability to think and work independently
            • Banner (Compass) and Howdy proficiency
            • Bilingual (English/Spanish)

              Responsibilities:

              • Delivers academic advice to undergraduate students pursuing a degree or minor from the College of Liberal Arts: admission/readmission, professional concerns, housing, financial aid, student services, degree programs, academic schedules, study abroad opportunities, course planning and selection, education and career goals; advises students with academic, probationary, and financial concerns and determines possible courses of action; reviews degree plans with students; processes add/drop, Q-drops, withdrawal questions, change of curriculum, course substitutions (Undergraduate Adjustment System).
              • Establishes and monitors student probationary terms as necessary; advises students on academic preparation, time management, test anxiety and study skills; refers students to University resources for students with disabilities, writing assistance, and counseling; uses Compass for checking student records and processing changes. Reviews and approves degree plans submitted through the Student Degree Planner system for undergraduate students.
              • Processes withdrawals, Q-drops, adjustments, and other actions; follows TAMU policies
              • and procedures for special and routine cases; reviews degree plans with students and advises on academic, probationary, and financial concerns; refers students to TAMU and off-campus resources (e.g., internships); checks and maintains student records in Compass; tracks student successes and problems using SSC-Campus.
              • Work with the associate dean to ensure courses are recorded with the correct high impact attribute each semester and short enrollment courses receive an approved justification to the dean.
              • Communicates with departments the available classroom space allocated for use by the
              • College of Liberal Arts. Work with the Office of the Registrar to train and create scheduling accounts in Astra Schedule. Reiterates university-wide deadlines related to classroom scheduling and the schedule for building the schedule of courses for a semester. Performs miscellaneous duties related to the scheduling process. Completes other responsibilities as assigned by the associate dean. Maintains access to the room scheduling software Astra Schedule and the Section Request System.
              • Evaluate and approve requests for adjustments in the degree plan, double major/double degree requests and adjustments, course overload requests, and curricular exceptions, using independent judgment in the adjustment of student records, making recommendations to the associate dean as needed. Maintain access to undergraduate adjustment system.
              • Communicate with dismissed students from the College of Liberal Arts by providing instructions for readmission. Continue working with individual students to encourage future enrollment once non-academic related issues are resolved, or the student is ready to return to complete degree program requirements.
              • Evaluate and approve requests for adjustments in the degree plan, double major/double degree requests and adjustments, course overload requests, and curricular exceptions, using independent judgment in the adjustment of student records, making recommendations to the associate dean as needed. Maintain access to undergraduate adjustment system.
              • Serve on the Academic Appeal & Petition Review Board; research and evaluate incoming appeals and petitions. Evaluate and approve requests for various actions using independent judgment in the adjustment of student records, making recommendations to the associate dean as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.
