Summary

This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service, Plains Area, Southern Plains Agricultural Research Center, Food and Feed Safety Research Unit, College Station, TX.

The incumbent performs a range of experiments which are designed to provide answers for animal or foodborne pathogens.

Responsibilities

  • Performs tests and analyses by applying established analytical methods and procedures or by operating an automated analytical system according to established operating procedures.
  • Independently perform recurring tests and analyses, evaluate methodologies, and make minor modifications of procedures and protocols related to the animal or foodborne pathogens.
  • Performs bacteriology techniques such as working with plates, isolating DNA RNA, bacteriology culture, or pouring plates.
  • Performs clinical laboratory test procedures such as clinical technical assays.
  • Maintaining livestock herds, poultry flocks and/or Insect colonies according to official animal care and use regulations
  • Devises and recommends alternative methods of standardized analysis to solve problems.
  • Prepares results of findings from experiments conducted, including initial interpretation of significance to the overall project, for inclusion in manuscripts, technical reports, oral presentations, and progress reports.
  • Maintains equipment and instrumentation in top working condition, performing routine preventative maintenance and minor repairs, and promptly reporting signs of malfunction or need for major repairs.
  • Maintains official laboratory notebooks recording the methods and procedures used, any modifications of methodology applied, and the results.
  • Calibrates and operates specialized microbiological and chemical laboratory equipment such as Chemostat/continuous flow unit, Polymerase chain reaction machine (PCR), Nucleic Acid processes, or Minimum Inhibitory concentration assay.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements:

Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

OR

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

GS-09:

Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-X07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting in fermentative and microbiological experiments related to animal or foodborne pathogens; and caring for livestock, poultry, or insects.

OR

Education: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree, if related. Related degrees may include Infectious disease, Microbiology, Bacteriology, Medical science, Veterinary Science, Clinical science, Animal science, Molecular biology, or Food science.

OR

An appropriate combination of education and experience as described above.

GS-11:

Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience performing fermentative and microbiological experiments related to animal or foodborne pathogens; caring for livestock, poultry, and insects; and preparing data for scientific or technical reports or manuscripts.

OR

Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, if related. Related degrees may include Infectious disease, Microbiology, Bacteriology, Medical science, Veterinary Science, Clinical science, Animal science, Molecular biology, or Food science.

OR

Successful combination of specialized experience and graduate level education.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
