What we want
We are looking for a Veterinary Technician I, to join the dynamic
Small Animal Fluid Ward department of our Veterinary Medical
Teaching Hospital! The ideal candidate enjoys administering
treatments to animals admitted to the Veterinary Medical Teaching
Hospital under the supervision of the faculty; provides clinical
assistance to the clinicians, residents and interns. The selected

What you need to know
Work Schedule - Ability to work alternative shifts, holidays,
weekends, and on-call duty. Essential Personnel - This position is
considered essential when the University declares an emergency,
campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore
required to report to work and remain on duty unless or until
relieved by their direct supervisor.

Required Education and Experience:
* Associate's degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science,
animal science or any equivalent combination of relevant education
and experience
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Basic computer skills
* General understanding of equipment used in a veterinary medical
teaching hospital
* May require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, or
on-call duty
* Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
Other Requirements or Other Factors:
* Ability to work around animals, hay, or dust
* Able to lift heavy loads
* Persons in this position are considered essential when the
University declares an emergency, campus closure, class

Preferred Education and Experience:
* One year experience in a veterinary medical setting
Preferred Knowledge and Skills:
* Working knowledge of veterinary equipment used within a
veterinary teaching hospital such as anesthetic machines, fluid
pumps, blood gas analyzers, oscilloscopes, defibrillators,
nebulizers, and endoscopic equipment preferred
Preferred Licenses, Certifications and Registrations:
* Certification as a Licensed Veterinary Technician. Veterinary
Technician Specialist (VTS) certification in Emergency and Critical
Care, Anesthesia, or Internal Medicine
Responsibilities may include, but not limited to:
* Provides Nursing Care to Fluid Ward Patients - Monitors physical
and medical condition of Fluid Ward patients. Administers patient
medications as directed by the clinician. Monitors fluid therapy.
Performs pain score assessments. Feeds patients according to
clinician's orders. Maintains clean and sanitary patient
environment. Performs other routine tasks involved in daily patient
care, as directed by the clinician.
* Performs Medical Procedures per Clinician's Direction - Places
and maintains IV catheters. Places urinary catheters. Places and
maintains bandages. Performs wound management.
* Maintenance of Complete and Accurate Medical Records - Records
data regarding patient's physical and medical status. Records all
medications administered. Records fluid types and volumes
administered. Records information regarding urine output,
mentation, appetite, and other parameters as needed. Records
changes in the medical orders, as directed by the clinician.
Captures fees and inputs fees into the VMIS system.
* Assists with Laboratory Monitoring - Performs laboratory tests
(NOVA, glucose level, lactate, PCV/TS, and blood typing). Assists
clinicians and students with laboratory sample collection.
* Provides Life-Sustaining Emergency Care - Performs CPCR and
defibrillation. Provides oxygen therapy.
* Provides Instruction and Guidance to Students - Participates in
continuing education seminars. Participates in laboratory
instruction and instruction of the clinical skills lab.
* General Duties and Requirements - Maintains inventory and
replenishes stock. Performs service and maintenance of equipment.
Provides support to other services within the VMTH. Provides
oversight and instruction of students. Provides care to patients
housed in Isolation. Remains current with safety classes, rabies
prophylaxis, and licensure; Radiation safety; Infection control;
Aseptic technique. Maintains certification or licensure where
appropriate. Participates in clinical and basic research programs
as needed. Assists in clinical research efforts to include
record-keeping and data management. Performs other duties as
assign.
