The Global Health Research Complex (GHRC) at Texas A&M University is a brand new state-of-the-art biocontainment research facility that will improve animal and human health within the State of Texas, across the United States, and around the globe. The GHRC supports and advances multi-disciplinary large animal and insect vector research, education, and training opportunities for faculty at Texas A&M and their partners from other academic institutions and industry. What We Want

The GHRC is seeking a Clinical Veterinarian who will coordinate and oversee all aspects of animal care at ABSL-2 and BSL3-Ag environments; ensure animal records are compliant with institutional, government, and other regulatory policies; provide supervision and leadership of laboratory animal technical staff; and liaise with potential GHRC clientele to develop new research program opportunities and plan animal research projects to fulfill client objectives. We need an individual who subscribes to and supports our commitment as stated above. The successful candidate will have prior experience working with wildlife, biocontainment (ABSL-2, ABSL-3, or BSL-3Ag) programs and facilities, large animal surgery, and prior research experience in an academic institution as a D.V.M. What you need to know

This job has a potential for safety hazard exposures and infectious disease exposures, and requires the ability to work sometimes under challenging conditions (high humidity/temperature, unpleasant odors, animal excreta and noise). Medical evaluation is required at least annually, and full participation in a medical clearance program is required, which includes blood testing and possibly vaccinations. May be required to take several showers each day, is required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment, and stand for prolonged periods of time.

Persons in this position may be considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor. May require working holidays, weekends, or "on-call" duty.

Required Education and Experience:


  • Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) from an AVMA accredited school
  • Three years' experience in veterinary medicine, specifically with large animal species such as cattle, horses, sheep, pigs and goats

    Preferred Education and Experience:

    • Additional post graduate degree(s) in related fields
    • Five years' experience with large animal species
    • Experience working with wildlife
    • Prior experience with biocontainment (ABSL-2, ABSL-3, or BSL-3Ag) programs and facilities
    • Experience with large animal surgery
    • Prior experience in an academic institution as a D.V.M.

      Required Background Check, Licenses and Certifications:

      • Must be able to undergo and maintain a favorable background investigation and National Select Agent Registration security risk assessment
      • License to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state in the United States
      • Eligible for licensure to practice Veterinary Medicine in the state of Texas USDA Veterinary Accreditation
      • Eligibility for clearance through the Department of Justice for access to select agents
      • Must be able to successfully obtain Biological Select Agent and Toxin certification

        Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

        • Strong organizational skills
        • Must have the ability to handle, restrain, clinically observe and identify health concerns in a wide range of large animal species
        • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others
        • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to ensure understanding
        • Requires mobility and agility to move quickly in a dangerous situation

          Responsibilities

          Developing, Planning, Performing and Managing GHRC Client Animal Projects

          Develops, documents, and implements comprehensive GHRC Animal Health management programs, processes, and procedures. Liaises with GHRC clients to develop funding opportunities and plan animal study protocols and health monitoring regimes that achieve client objectives. Liaises with TAMU CMP, GHRC clients, and TAMU research community to encourage use of GHRC's surgical facility. Provides clients with professional clinical evaluation services, animal health status reports and data collected during performance of their projects. Assures that GHRC's animal research programs comply with all applicable animal welfare, occupational health, and regulatory compliance laws and guidelines. As a member of the GHRC senior leadership team, participates in developing and executing GHRC's overall strategic planning, business development, and resource management activities.

          Provide comprehensive clinical veterinary, animal care and surgery services to GHRC

          Oversees and provides clinical care, diagnostic testing, and treatment plans as indicated under study protocols and/or routine animal health regimes. Consults with GHRC clients and staff regarding animal health status and treatment plans as required. Performs necropsies and reports gross pathology findings - organizes consultations with external pathology expertise as required by project plans or clinical signs. Establishes policies and procedures for using the GHRC surgical facilities and coordinates provision of surgical services as required by clients. Oversees preventive medicine and enrichment programs for research animals. Performs surgical and medical procedures as needed. Reviews research animal protocols and assists principal investigators in research studies, when requested.

          Train and Manage GHRC Animal Care Staff

          Supervises and manages GHRC Animal Care Supervisor. Fosters professional development of GHRC animal care staff by training them on animal handling and health monitoring activities required across the range of species maintained and handled in GHRC. Develops and delivers training materials and courses for animal handling, animal husbandry and veterinary care in containment - for in-house staff and GHRC visiting scientists and students and/or bespoke training courses. Oversees the training in the humane use and care of research animals. Provides and directs clinical care of research animals including diagnosis and treatments.

          Joint appointment with TAMU CMP

          Provides clinical care for research animals at CMP managed facilities. Provides animal care and use training to CMP and investigative staff as needed. Provides veterinary review of assigned Texas A&M College Station IACUC protocols as appropriate. Oversees AgBSL3 specific training of CMP staff. Participates in CMP veterinary staff after-hours on-call schedule (negotiable depending on other GHRC duties).

          Other

          Performs other duties as assigned.
