Glimpse of the Job
The Network Engineer III, designs configures, and troubleshoots
networks across all of Texas A&M University and Texas. In
addition to configuring VLANs, OSPF, MPLS and BGP, you troubleshoot
EVPN VXLAN in our datacenters. Occasionally will create WAN
connections, instantiation of secure tunnels on the firewalls,
updating VPN software for our remote clients, and network equipment
firmware updates.
The Next Generation Aggie Network is underway giving you providing
the opportunity to work on projects to replace our legacy network
with a whole new network. We are looking for someone who is
proactive, hungry to learn more, knows how to work in a team of
talented network engineers, and can work with IT experts across the
university.
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of
experience and education
Five years networking design experience
Exports Control position which requires US Citizen
Hands-on experience with entreprise grade Cisco network equipment,
Identity Services Engine, Prime Infrastructure
Experience working in a University setting or large enterprise
network a plus
CCNP certification a plus
Skills
Knowledge of Networking and associated protocols including
EVPN-VXLAN, BGP/MPLS, OSPF, and other internet associated
protocols
Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to
collaborate effectively across the organization
Project Management
Job Responsibilities
Design Networks and Network Upgrades - Implements and coordinates
design activities for very complex, networking projects. Reviews
network design plans. Reviews construction blueprints. Works with
the Project Management Team and attends construction meetings.
Develops network design plans. Implements networks from design
plans. Works with the Chief and Network Architect on network
designs.
Network Testing and Security - Implements and coordinates tests for
used to certify complex networking projects to required
installation design standards. Reviews plans for installation and
testing of enterprise-level networks. Creates lab environments for
testing network plans before they put in production. Uses
automation to complete routine task. In collaboration with the
network security team, helps oversee the monitoring and maintenance
of network security. Reviews security alerts to see how they apply
to equipment in the field. Applies software updates to network
equipment. Works with the vendors for security vulnerabilities
alerts.
Problem Management - In collaboration with the field services and
installation teams, helps coordinate and monitor the problem
management process to include backup support. Analyzes,
troubleshoots, tracks, and repairs complex enterprise data.
Documents using change and problem management.
Client/Vendor Consultation - Provides technical oversight for the
development of plans for new networks or upgrades. Facilitates
input from clients, systems administrators, contractors, and
vendors to develop specifications and plans for large and complex
networking projects. Meets with vendors to review latest technology
and road maps. Works with vendors on demos and demonstrates how the
product will work in a campus environment. Meets with
customers.
Documentation - Oversees the process used to document network
changes. Monitors and audits documentation of network engineering
designs, plans, maps, methods, procedures, problems, and repairs.
Uses change management to document changes. Creates SOP's. Creates
network maps. Reviews changes made to network equipment.
New Technology Deployment and System Integration Testing - Creates,
evaluates, and approves plans for the implementation of new
technology deployments and system integration testing.
Technology Planning and Evaluation - Coordinates the evaluation of
new technologies. Makes recommendations based on the evaluation of
new technologies for their applicability to the client's needs.
Project Planning Support - Collaborates with the project leader to
develop work plans and time schedules for projects including
outlining phases and identifying personnel and computing equipment
requirements. Attends weekly project meetings.
Project Team - Coordinates the technical activities of a project
team. Completes reports and summaries for management and/or users
including status reports, problem reports, progress summaries, and
system utilization reports. Serves as a senior member of an
information resource team responsible for setting technical
direction. Performs all or some of the duties of a Senior Network
Engineer and other duties as assigned.
Professional Development - Participates in training and
professional development sessions.
