WTAMU and AgriLife are seeking an outstanding, innovative and dynamic researcher with a record of leadership and management in engineering design focused on water solutions. West Texas A & M University is located in one of the largest farming and cattle feeding areas in the world. This position will require a collaborative approach to technology development that crosses academic boundaries and provides an opportunity for innovation at the intersection of engineering and agriculture. The incumbent will assume joint academic appointments with Texas A & M AgriLife Extension Service and West Texas A & M University and will be based in the School of Engineering, Computer Science, and Mathematics at West Texas A & M University in, Canyon, TX. The extension appointment will be with the Biological and Agricultural Engineering Department in College Station, Texas, and will provide the incumbent the ability to mentor doctoral students at Texas A & M University. The incumbent will be expected to lead a nationally prominent research and extension program focused on regional needs such as water and energy efficiency and irrigation optimization. Position Title: Associate Professor/Extension Specialist (Water Engineering) Appointment: 50% West Texas A & M University, Tenure-track; 50 % Texas A & M AgriLife Extension Service Position Responsibilities: This position will be expected to develop a collaborative water engineering research and extension program with WTAMU engineering and agriculture faculty and teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses in engineering at West Texas A & M University. - Compete aggressively for federal and other competitive funding for research, Extension, and education in irrigation, water resources, ground water conservation, and related areas. - Conduct and report water engineering and management research in areas such as irrigation technologies and management strategies to promote water and energy efficiency and sustainability of agriculture in the region. - Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals. - Develop and deliver educational materials related to water engineering such as irrigation technologies, water conservation, irrigation scheduling, and resilience of agricultural production systems under limited water resources conditions using conventional and web-based communication technologies, and supporting county-based extension programs through professional development of County Agents and external stakeholders. - Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses to support degree programs at WTAMU (one 3-credit-hour class per long semester). - Advise graduate and/or undergraduate students in research at WTAMU and/or other TAMUS universities. - Participate on interdisciplinary teams with faculty in Amarillo, Lubbock, Canyon, College Station, and other parts of the Texas A & M University System, other Great Plains universities, and federal agencies such as USDA-ARS, as appropriate for planned programs. - Develop working relationships with agricultural engineering and irrigation industry and participate in industry and professional associations. - Report on Extension educational activities periodically using required reporting tools. - Serve on unit, departmental, agency, and university committees as appropriate. - Ability to travel to participate in meetings and conduct research and educational programs. Administrative Relationships: The position reports to the Dean of the WTAMU School of Engineering, Computer Sciences and Mathematics and to the Associate Department Head for Extension and Department Head in the Department of Biological & Agricultural Engineering at Texas A & M University. Qualifications: - Ph.D. in engineering--biological, agricultural, mechanical, or a related engineering degree, with academic preparation and interest in water engineering, irrigation engineering, agricultural water management, and related subject matter. - Experience with practical applications of water engineering technologies and management. - Commitment to an interdisciplinary team approach to research and education. - Experience with designing and conducting field-based, applied research. - Demonstrated experience in securing external funding and scholarly publication - The candidate will be expected to either hold a professional engineering license or be qualified to become a licensed/registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas. Preferred Experience: - Knowledge of groundwater resource issues. - Familiarity with High Plains crops and cropping systems (row crops, grain crops). - Ability and inclination to conduct field work and operate agricultural equipment. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Excellent English oral, written, and electronic communication skills. Ability to use personal computer to communicate effectively, prepare proposals to include cost information on spreadsheets, and provide reports of activities. Ability to work both independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team. Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students and stakeholders. Ability to develop and deliver high quality courses and research experiences for graduate and undergraduate students. Ability to multi-task and manage support staff.
