We administer scholarships and financial aid, which include the following programs: grants, student loans, student employment, veteran educational benefits, athletic aid coordination, short-term loans, and emergency tuition and fee loans. In addition our office provides advising on the programs listed above. Our office also assist students in gaining financial literacy knowledge through our Money Education Center. Our office is responsible for processing student aid and veteran educational benefits for College Station, Galveston, all Health Science Center sites and Qatar which totaled approximately $836 million in financial aid assistance for the prior academic year.The Academic Affairs Recruiting Office assisted with the creation and posting of this job requisition for Scholarships & Financial Aid.What we wantScholarships & Financial Aid is seeking a Financial Aid Advisor I, who enjoys learning and helping students find solutions to pay for college. The ideal candidate is innovative, pays close attention to detail and has experience supporting, advising or working with college students. The selected candidate will subscribe to and support our commitment to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accountability (IDEA) as stated above.The Financial Aid Advisor I, under direction, counsels and provides student financial aid and scholarship information to prospective and currently enrolled students and their families. The selected candidate facilitates workshops, develops and makes presentations on and off campus to groups regarding financial aid and scholarships and may coordinate or specialize in a specific program.       • Must comply with Texas A&M System Policy 07.02 - Texas Higher Education Fair Lending Practices. Must be in good standing on all Federal Student Loans. The U.S. Dept. of Education will not grant access to student loan data for any individual who is in default status. Access to such information is a necessity for this position. Must be able to rectify default status within three months of employment. Good standing must be maintained for continued employment. Requires some evening and weekend work as well as travel.Preferred Experience:
        • Customer service experience, particularly within higher education
        • Experience in Student Affairs or providing academic support services to college/university studentsPreferred Licenses and Certifications:
          • Certified Financial Advisor or Accredited Financial CounselorPreferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
            • Knowledge of current versions of Microsoft products, including Windows and Office
            • Knowledge of Financial Aid or Student Information Systems
            • Bilingual in Spanish
            • Background in general office conditions with much time spent in contact with students
            • Ability to develop and make presentations
            • Knowledge and experience in an enrollment management area focusing on outreach and/or retentionHourly pay rate: $14.53 - $18.67Responsibilities:
              • Customer Service - Serves as an advisor on scholarships information and provides prompt advising in response to inquiries via email. Advises students and parents by assisting with questions with students accounts. Learns to apply discretion and independent judgment to advise and counsel students, parents, and/or prospective students in solving their educational financial problems through scholarships, loans, grants, and employment and financial counseling. Provides information on various scholarships. Informs students and parents of options for funding an education. Guides students through the application for and processing of financial aid and scholarships. Explains terms and conditions of financial aid awards clearly and thoroughly, which may include Satisfactory Academic Progress appeals, and loan and indebtedness counseling.
              • Customer Service (continued) - Maximizes federal, state, and institutional financial aid options using some discretion and independent judgment. Advises on campus resources available to students for both financial aid and non-financial aid issues. Provides information on outside funding resources. Serves each student according to individual needs. Provides general administrative support throughout the department during peak times. Learns to and assists with conducting on and off-campus presentations, seminars, and/or workshops for students and possibly for professional development training. Learns to award, revise, and/or approve the awarding of financial aid through the specific controls of program policy and guidelines. Learns to use discretion and independent judgment to provide information on and refers students to University resources that can assist them in meeting their needs or solving their problems. Assists other staff as necessary in identifying university resources.
              • Team Specialty - Coordinates needs-analysis certificates for various scholarship programs. Assists with various team specialty reports to maintain compliance and serve the students as appropriate. Serves as primary contact and advisor who processes the Texas Application for State Financial Aid. Learns to coordinate all aspects of processing various reporting to remain in compliance with rules and regulations. Learns to process student travel to include pulling required documentation to process/post an educational resource. Learns to coordinate production and distribution of grade reports. Learns to coordinate certifications for Bamberger and Southwest Expo.
              • Financial Aid Knowledge & Team Support - Provides assistance and guidance to other financial aid staff to ensure that processing activities adhere to established policies and procedures. Assists in the training and supervision of departmental student workers in performing assigned tasks. Assists in developing and revising financial aid consumer information material, publications and brochures for currently enrolled students, prospective students and their parents, colleges, departments and university use. Participates in and may lead departmental work groups. Interprets and maintains knowledge of current federal, state, and institutional policies, procedures, and regulations pertaining to financial aid, student employment, and scholarships. Knows how outreach and early awareness staff interact with CS staff and transition students from prospective to currently enrolled Texas A&M students. Attends departmental and other training. Reviews complex rules, regulations procedures and policies relating to financial aid, scholarships, and customer service, and recommend revisions to University or departmental policies and procedures and assists in informing and/or training other staff. May work with state, regional, or national committees concerning new, changed or deleted regulations and impacts to financial aid offices and students.
              • General - Assists in planning and execution of events for specific audiences and in support of departmental initiatives (e.g. financial aid awareness programs, Aggieland Saturday, outreach efforts). Attends local, state, and national workshops, and conferences. May participate in committees for industry organizations or within the University. Assists in developing and presenting training seminars on pertinent topics and procedures within team area of expertise. Responds to varied questions that may require researching and consolidating data regarding financial aid, scholarships, and specialized programs.
              • Advising - Performs reviews for professional judgment of student files, making adjustments as needed. Serves as occasional scheduled Phone Queue agent and assists with coverage of front counter in the main reception area of department. Greets visitors, answers inquiries regarding federal financial aid forms, records, procedures, and policies. Assists students with specialized needs, such as Study Abroad, Vocational Rehabilitation, Graduate, and International Students.
